Why Deck Builders Choose Ground Screws

Six reasons timber and composite deck installers trust us with their foundations.

Solves any slope

Each screw individually height-adjusted. Decks built dead-flat on hillsides and uneven lawns.

Prevents timber rot

Joists raised cleanly off the ground, fully ventilated. Vastly extends deck life.

No earthworks

Zero excavation, no spoil, no concrete pads. Your garden stays as it was.

Same-day handover

We install the screws in a day, the deck builder fixes joists directly the same afternoon.

Future-proof

Decks lift cleanly if you ever need to relocate or extend. No concrete to demolish.

Hot tubs supported

Higher-spec screws under hot tub footprint to handle 1-2 tonne dynamic loads.

Engineered Quote

Fixed-price quote within 24 hours, with screw spec, spacing, and load capacity for your deck's footprint.

One-Day Install

Our team installs each screw to your deck builder's exact spacing — typically 1.2-2m intervals depending on joist span.

Hand-Over

Every screw cap left perfectly level, ready for the deck builder to fix joists directly. Often same-day handover.

Decking Foundations: Ground Screws vs Concrete Posts.

Concrete Posts

  • 3-7 day cure before deck can be built
  • Post-hole digging required
  • Timber sits on damp concrete (rots faster)
  • Permanent — can't relocate the deck
  • Concrete cracks in frost

MW Ground Screws

  • Joists fixed same day
  • Zero excavation needed
  • Timber raised above ground (lasts longer)
  • Deck can be lifted cleanly
  • Install in any season

WHAT TO EXPECT

How We Build A Decking Base.

No excavationOften a 1-day install35-year guarantee

The number of screws and the layout depend on the size, height and load of the deck, so every base is engineered to its own plan. For most domestic decks that means a handful of screws driven in a single day — with no excavation, no spoil and no concrete to cure — and the timber frame can go straight on top. Because each screw is set and levelled individually, ground screws handle sloping, soft or awkward-access plots that are difficult to concrete. Every installation is backed by our 35-year structural guarantee.

Decking Foundations: Frequently Asked Questions

How many screws do I need for my deck?
Depends on the deck size, joist span, and load. A standard 4m × 3m timber deck typically needs 8-12 screws. We confirm exact numbers in the site survey.
Can ground screws support a composite deck?
Yes — composite or timber, both work. Composite decking is heavier per m² so we adjust screw spacing accordingly.
What about hot tubs on the deck?
Filled hot tubs are heavy (1-2 tonnes including water and bathers). We use longer, higher-spec screws under the hot tub footprint and engineer the foundation to that specific load.
Can I install decking over a slope without retaining walls?
Yes — that's one of the best uses of ground screws. Each screw extends to a different depth to compensate for the slope, giving you a perfectly flat deck above what looks like impossible terrain.
Are ground screw decks suitable for boardwalks and bridges?
Yes. Coastal boardwalks, nature reserve walkways, and pond bridges have all been built on screw piles. Same principle — minimal ground disturbance and long lifespan.
Will the deck feel as solid as one on concrete posts?
Yes — often more solid, because screws bypass shallow soft soil to anchor in load-bearing strata. The result is a rock-solid, level deck with no movement.
How long does a typical decking foundation take?
Most domestic decks 4-6 hours onsite. Larger commercial decks or multi-level terraces typically 1-2 days.
Can the screws be removed if I sell the house?
Yes — fully reversible. Each screw can be extracted cleanly, leaving the ground undisturbed. Perfect if you want to take the deck with you or repurpose the space.
